Common Questions
Common landowner questions about timber sales, cruises, management plans, and forestry consulting in Mississippi and Alabama — answered by registered foresters.
Why should I consider using a consulting forester?
A consulting forester represents you, the landowner — not the sawmill or the logger. That means independent valuations, sealed-bid marketing of your timber to qualified buyers, written contracts, and on-the-ground oversight of the harvest.
How are you paid?
On most timber sales we work on a percentage of gross proceeds, which keeps our incentives aligned with yours. Other services (management plans, appraisals, TSI) are bid on scope. We'll walk through fees up front before any work begins.
Do I have to sell my timber to work with you?
No. Many of our clients hire us for management planning, reforestation, prescribed burning, appraisals for estate or tax purposes, or simply a second opinion on what a timber buyer has told them.
How long does a timber sale take?
The time needed to inspect and cruise the tract, prepare the sale package, receive bids, and complete the contract varies with tract size, access, fieldwork, buyer response, and the landowner's decisions. That marketing and contracting period is separate from the buyer's harvesting period. Southeast Forestlands allows at least 12 months for harvesting, most commonly 18 months, and sometimes 24 months when sale conditions call for more time.
What counties do you work in?
We work across most of Mississippi and into western Alabama. If you're not sure whether your tract is in our area, give us a call and we can confirm coverage. Scheduling a property walk depends on current fieldwork, location, weather, and access.
Will you inspect my property before I commit?
Yes. The first conversation is free, and we'll walk the tract with you to understand the property and your goals before recommending any course of action.
