"Eric did a great job putting together a Forestry Management Plan for our family farm. He came to our farm, toured the property, assessed the different stands of timber and flew his drone to capture pictures and video. Very professionally done!"

"Incredibly knowledgeable in a variety of ways. Incredibly responsive (which is hard to find in this field). Polite, patient… very patient. Even in pandemic situations he kept things moving forward. Highly recommend."

Clay County sits in the northeast part of Mississippi. Much of the county is prairie ground with dark, tight clay under it. The east side drops toward the Tombigbee bottom, and that bottom holds water. It is common to own both kinds of ground on one place.

Southeast Forestlands works only for the landowner. We do not buy timber and we are not paid by mills.

Tight Clay Sets the Calendar

Clay dries hard and cracks in late summer. The same ground turns slick after a wet week in winter.

The timber is not the problem here. Getting to it is. Plan a harvest around dry stretches, and put a stop-work rule in writing.

Build Roads Up, Do Not Cut Them In

A road cut down into clay becomes a ditch. Water sits in it and the ruts get deeper every trip.

On this ground a road should be built up, crowned, and drained to the side. It costs a little more at the start. It saves the whole job when weather turns.

Prairie Edges and Bottom Hardwood

Pine does best on the lighter, better drained spots. The heavy prairie flats and the low ground near the river usually hold hardwood.

They are different products with different buyers. Cruise them apart and offer them apart, so neither one is described by the other.

Thinning Where Ground Is Soft

Size and stand thickness decide a thinning, not the age on paper.

On soft ground the row you pull out matters as much as the trees you leave. A clean travel row keeps the machine off wet spots and keeps the rest of the stand from getting torn up. Skinned bark on a residual stem is a wound that stays with the tree.

Walk It Before Anything Is Promised

Lines, gates, and a place to turn a loaded truck are facts about your tract, not about the county.

So is the low spot that only shows itself after a hard rain. Walk the place first.

Nearby Counties

We also work with landowners in nearby counties, including Lowndes, Oktibbeha, Webster, Chickasaw, and Monroe.
