"Incredibly knowledgeable in a variety of ways. Incredibly responsive (which is hard to find in this field). Polite, patient… very patient. Even in pandemic situations he kept things moving forward. Highly recommend."

"Working with Eric helped us qualify our land as agricultural for property taxes. He cleared timber in a friendly way that pleased our neighbors, built a road into the property, and kept us apprised of every item in a timely fashion."

Wilkinson County is the far southwest corner of Mississippi, bluff country above the river. Deep windblown silt covers most of it. That silt grows good timber and it washes badly once it is bare.

Southeast Forestlands works for the landowner and no one else. The firm does not buy standing timber and does not take payment from anyone purchasing it.

Silt on Slope

More than a third of the county lies on slopes steep enough to change how a job is laid out. Loess stands in a vertical face when dry. It erodes readily when exposed to runoff.

A rut left in October can still carry water in March. Keep roads and landings on the ridge tops. Close trails out with water breaks and seed before the crew leaves.

Check for Restrictive Subsoil Layers

Parts of the county may have a firm subsoil layer that limits rooting; check soil conditions on the tract rather than assuming roots stop at a fixed depth.

Base thinning intensity and the next entry on stocking, tree condition, rooting depth, and wind exposure rather than a countywide schedule.

The Buffalo River Bottom

Close to one acre in six is mapped as ground that floods. The ravines are short and steep. They empty into the Buffalo River in a hurry.

Silt travels with that water. Flag buffer widths and crossings before the first load.

What Goes Back and What Is Left Alone

The regeneration plan is settled while the sale is written. Ridge and gentler upland ground is planted. Species, spacing, and site preparation are named on paper.

Steep bluff faces are a separate question. Letting them come back on their own is sound only after a walk confirms seed trees and young stems are already there.

Nearby Counties

Landowners in Adams, Amite, and Franklin counties are served as well. Field dates, once the work is agreed, depend on where the tract sits, current fieldwork, and weather.

Talk It Over First

If nobody has looked at the timber in ten years, that alone is reason to have it looked at. Get in touch and we will review the property with you and tell you plainly what the next steps are.

Common questions

Common Questions From Wilkinson County, MS Timberland Owners

With a measurement, not a guess. We put plots on the ground, tally by product, and figure volume for the stand. From there a timber appraisal attaches value. Demand moves through the year, so an appraisal describes the tract in the market as it stands that season.

Wilkinson County tracts run from loblolly plantations on the Citronelle uplands to mixed pine-hardwood on the loess slopes and rich bottomland hardwood along the Buffalo and Homochitto. What we do with it depends on age and condition. A stand that is ready goes to a sealed-bid sale; one that is crowded gets thinned; one that is still young gets written into a forest management plan and left to put on growth.

Rough, then better. Site prep and reforestation put the seedlings in; a herbicide release keeps hardwood sprouts and briars from shading them out. By mid-rotation the tools are timber stand improvement and prescribed burning.

Regularly. Wilkinson County is part of the southwest corner of Mississippi at the Louisiana line, between the Homochitto National Forest and the river, and the neighbouring counties — Adams, Amite, and Franklin — see the same work. Weather, access, and current fieldwork set the schedule, so contact us about a date.

The landowner does, and nobody else. We do not purchase standing timber and we take no commission from the buying side. Offers come in written and sealed so they can be laid next to each other on the same table.
