Pickens County is in west central Alabama on the Mississippi line. Most of the timberland here is privately owned. Much of that land is rolling to steep.

Slope Is the Defining Feature
Much of the county is cut up upland where water moves fast. That ground carries equipment well. Wet weather is not usually what stops a job here.
What matters is bare soil on a grade after a harvest. Turnouts, water bars, and closing trails out at the end are the heart of the work on most tracts.
A third of the county reaches slopes of 25 percent or more. On that ground the water bars go in as the job moves, not after it.
Scattered through the county are flatter spots near the creeks. Some grow timber as well as any ground on a place. Others hold water in the wet months. Find them before a job is planned rather than during it.
Genuinely Mixed Timber
Pine leads here. Hardwood is common on the uplands and along the creeks as well. Many tracts are honestly mixed.
On a mixed tract, ask for the inventory to report species and quality apart. A single lump figure tells an owner very little about what is standing.
Inspect Before Deciding
Steeper ground makes the way in and the road layout the first thing to look at. The buffer along a creek should be wider where the ground beside it is steep.
Stocking, timber type, and property lines all have to be confirmed on the tract. Do that before a harvest or a sale is decided.
