"Eric did a great job putting together a Forestry Management Plan for our family farm. He came to our farm, toured the property, assessed the different stands of timber and flew his drone to capture pictures and video. Very professionally done!"

"Incredibly knowledgeable in a variety of ways. Incredibly responsive (which is hard to find in this field). Polite, patient… very patient. Even in pandemic situations he kept things moving forward. Highly recommend."

Lowndes County is in northeast Mississippi where the prairie meets the hills. Columbus sits on the Tombigbee. Both pine and hardwood occur here.

Southeast Forestlands works only for the landowner. We do not buy timber and we are not paid by mills.

Three Kinds of Ground Inside One Boundary

One tract here can hold heavy prairie clay, sandier ground, and river bottom. The clay sets the schedule. It can be firm in September and unable to carry a loaded truck in February.

The sandier ground beside it works most of the year. The bottoms along the Tombigbee and its creeks flood and stay wet.

Hardwood Changes How the Sale Is Handled

Upland oak, mixed oak and pine, and bottomland hardwood are all found here. Hardwood is graded log by log on quality, so it does not sell the way planted pine does.

Crossings, Access, and What to Confirm

On flat ground the buffer width along a creek is rarely the hard part. The crossings are. Where clay comes down to a creek, the number of crossings and where they sit can decide whether a wet week costs a day or a month.

Some bottomland can flood from time to time. Find out which acres those are before the timber is offered. Then check the way in, confirm the lines, and have the timber looked at so the pine and the hardwood are each described for what they are.

Common questions

Common Questions From Lowndes County, MS Timberland Owners

A buffer of standing timber along the drains and creeks, sized to the stream and the slope, with limits on equipment inside it. The point is keeping soil out of the water. It is a contract term, not a suggestion.

From the first cruise plot to the last load, most sales run a few months. The cruise and write-up take a couple of weeks, the bid period runs two to three, and the harvest itself depends on tract size, weather, and how many crews the buyer has working.

No. The crew works for whoever buys the timber; we work for the person who owns it. Offers are collected sealed and reviewed side by side before anything is awarded.

It falls in northeast Mississippi along the Tombigbee Waterway, where the Black Prairie meets the hills. Adjacent counties we work in include Clay, Oktibbeha, Noxubee, Monroe, and Pickens (AL). The first review of a tract is generally done online; once the work is agreed, when field days can be scheduled depends on tract location, current fieldwork, and how wet the ground is.

Start with a cruise. A forester measures the standing timber, sorts it by product class, and estimates volume. A timber appraisal then puts a value on those products. Value depends on volume, tree quality, access, haul distance, and current demand, so it is set tract by tract.
