Longleaf restoration

Year-1 through year-5 on a longleaf restoration

Situation

A landowner in the longleaf range wanted to convert a marginal off-site loblolly stand back to longleaf after final harvest. The site was a fit, but the prescription window (site prep, planting stock, release, first burn) had to be sequenced correctly to clear the grass stage.

Approach

We wrote a multi-year plan: chemical and mechanical site prep, container longleaf at site-appropriate density, year-2 herbaceous release, and the first prescribed burn once seedlings were out of the grass stage. NRCS longleaf cost-share carried part of the cost.

Outcome

Survival held through year one, the year-two release controlled herbaceous competition, and the first growing-season burn went in once the candle stage was reached. The stand is on track for a long-rotation, fire-maintained longleaf forest.

Lesson

Longleaf restoration is a 3–5 year prescription, not a planting. The grass-stage management — release timing and first burn — is what decides whether the investment is realized.

Educational example, generalized from real Southeast Forestlands work. Specific counties, names, and dollar figures are intentionally omitted; ranges are directional, not guarantees of outcome on any individual tract.
