"Working with Eric helped us qualify our land as agricultural for property taxes. He cleared timber in a friendly way that pleased our neighbors, built a road into the property, and kept us apprised of every item in a timely fashion."

"Can't say enough good things about Southeast Forestlands. Even though my parcel wasn't a fit, Eric sent info and numbers of someone who could help. He took the time to inform me of common practice for clearing and harvesting timber."

Montgomery County is in north central Mississippi where the silt hills fall away toward the Delta. The land splits fairly evenly between deep silt ground and sandier cut up slopes.

Southeast Forestlands works only for the landowner. We do not buy timber and we are not paid by mills.

Gullies Start Out as Roads

The silt here is deep, fine, and productive. It also erodes readily when wet and bare.

So the biggest choice on a tract is where the haul road and the main skid trails go. Once soil starts moving on a grade it does not stop on its own. A trail that becomes a ditch can cause soil loss and make access difficult to restore.

Built up crossings, frequent turnouts, and closing trails out at the end of a job help control erosion on these slopes.

The flood plains along the Big Black River headwaters are wet much of the year. On the steep faces above them, a wider buffer is the difference between a clear creek and a muddy one after the first big rain.

What Grows Back Is a Decision, Not an Accident

Pine fits the ridges and the deeper slopes, and it is most of what stands here. On the wetter flats and near the bottoms, hardwood is the usual answer, but leaving it to seed in needs a check on seed trees and young stems first.

Decide that before the harvest, so the site preparation matches the acres it is meant for. Summer drought stress depends on rooting depth and the full soil profile, not texture alone.

Confirm It on the Tract

Road spots, crossings, property lines, stocking, and timber type all need looking at on the ground. On this terrain the road plan should be settled before anyone bids the job.

Common questions

Common Questions From Montgomery County, MS Timberland Owners

Montgomery County sits in north-central Mississippi where the loess hills meet the Delta edge. The counties around it — Carroll, Grenada, Webster, Choctaw, Attala, and Holmes — are regular territory. When we can get to a particular tract turns on where the current fieldwork is, the weather, and how the access looks, so call and we will talk through timing.

Logging is hard on roads; that is unavoidable. What is avoidable is being left with the damage. Road use, crossing standards, and the condition the roads are returned in should be written into the contract, then checked at closeout.

No. We can tell you what questions to ask, but a value comes from a cruise. Once the stand is measured and sorted by product, a timber appraisal gives you a defensible number for a sale, an estate filing, or a casualty loss on a tract in Montgomery County.

Usually the next planting season, once site prep is behind you. Reforestation covers that work. A first-year herbicide release is often the difference in survival, and timber stand improvement with prescribed burning comes later.

No. The crew works for whoever buys the timber; we work for the person who owns it. Offers are collected sealed and reviewed side by side before anything is awarded.
