Carroll County has two kinds of ground in one county line. The east side is hills. The west side runs out onto flat delta land. Those two halves do not behave the same, and a plan that fits one will not fit the other.
Southeast Forestlands works only for the landowner. We do not buy timber and we are not paid by mills.
One County, Two Plans
Hill ground drains and dries. Flat ground holds water at the surface for days.
If your place takes in both, treat it as two jobs. Different roads, different timing, and often different timber. Trying to run one schedule over both is where owners lose days and tear up ground.
Hill Soil Cuts Easily
The upland soil here is fine and light. Bare ground on a slope will start moving with the first hard rain.
Lay trails along the hill instead of straight down it. Break them with water bars and seed the openings. Cover put down early costs less than dirt work later.
Flat Ground Needs Built-Up Roads
Level land has nowhere to send water. A road cut into it fills up and stays full.
On the flat side, roads should be built up and crowned so the water leaves to the side. That is the difference between hauling in February and waiting until May.
Timber Follows the Ground
Pine does its best on the drier hill ground. The low flats usually carry hardwood.
Cruise and offer them separately. Put into one lump, neither stand gets described on its own terms.
Walk the Line Between Them
The spot where the hills give out and the flat begins is the most important line on the place.
It is not drawn on any map you own. You find it by walking it, usually in a wet month when the difference shows plainly.
