Choctaw County is hill country in the middle of Mississippi. The hills are steeper here than in most of the state. Sandy ridges run out with narrow hollows between them, and the hollows stay damp long after the ridges dry.

Steep Ground Changes How a Job Runs
Steep slopes slow a machine down, and they wear a road out faster.
It also means road layout deserves more thought here than on flat country. A good road on a ridge line serves a place for thirty years. A road cut across a steep face rarely lasts one wet winter.
Water Runs Instead of Standing
On hills the trouble is not standing water. It is moving water.
Water breaks and turnouts have to go in as the road is built. Skid trails should cross the slope, not run straight down it. A trail pointed downhill becomes a ditch after one wet season. Once water gets into a trail it will keep using it every rain.
Ridge Pine and Hollow Hardwood
Pine holds the sandy ridges and shoulders. Hardwood holds the hollows, and whether it restocks itself has to be checked stem by stem before you rely on it.
Plan them apart. Pine seedlings set in a damp hollow survive poorly and usually have to be replaced.
Thinning on the Slopes
A stand too thick for its size stops growing well.
Thinning frees the best trees. On slopes, keep the equipment on planned trails so the stand you keep is not damaged getting the rest out.
