Lamar County is in the pine belt of south Mississippi. Much of the ground is flat to gently rolling and sandy. It grows loblolly well. The catch is that flat sandy ground with a tight layer underneath can hold water at the surface longer than the sand suggests.

Flat Ground Fools People
Water does not run off a flat. It sits. A tract that feels solid in September can be soft in February.
Look at where the water stands after a big rain. Those spots decide your winter access, not the soil color.
Roads on Level Land
On flat ground the road has to be built up rather than cut in. A little added height and a ditch on both sides keeps a road usable.
Skipping that step is the most common reason a job here stops in the middle.
Pine That Comes on Fast
Loblolly does well on these sites and reaches thinning size early. Thick stands slow down and lean over easier in wind.
A first thinning on time leaves the better trees room to grow. Judge it on stem size and crowding, not on the planting date.
Wet Streaks and Drains
Narrow low strips through the pine stay damp year round and hold hardwood.
Leave them out of the pine job. Keeping them treed is what holds soil out of the branch below.
Setting Up the Next Stand
Most upland acres go back to loblolly. On the drier sandy spots longleaf is one of the choices to settle before seedlings are ordered.
Match the tree to the wetness of the spot rather than planting the whole tract the same.
