Benton County is hill country around Ashland, at the head of the Wolf River. The slopes here are steeper than most of north Mississippi, and that single fact drives nearly every decision on a tract.

This is steep ground by north Mississippi standards. Soil survey mapping puts large blocks of the county on slopes of twenty to forty-five percent.
Steep ground costs money to log. It slows equipment, limits deck locations, and it is the first thing a buyer prices in.
Pine Carries the County
Forest inventory estimates put loblolly and shortleaf ahead here, which is not the pattern in most of the counties around it. Oak and hickory come second.
That pine share is why thinning questions come up so often on this ground.
Thinning on a Side Hill
A crowded stand on a slope is harder to thin cleanly than the same stand on flat ground. Rows have to follow the contour, not the property line.
Have the stand measured first. Spacing and tree size decide the timing, not the age written on an old planting receipt.
Wolf River Headwaters
The Wolf River begins in this county. The small feeder branches above it are narrow but they cut deep.
Keep equipment out of them and cross at built crossings. On steep ground the buffer is doing real work holding soil in place.
Erosion Control Is Not Optional
Soil maps show severely eroded complexes across a wide part of the county. Once a skid trail on a steep slope starts to cut, it keeps cutting.
Water bars and closed-out trails at the end of the job protect the next rotation.
