Lawrence County lies along the Pearl River in south Mississippi. The uplands are rolling sand and loam that grow loblolly well. The river bottom is broad and wet and holds hardwood. One tract can touch both.

Where the Sawtimber Usually Is
On most places here the pine sits on the upland. It grows fast on this soil and reaches size early.
Watch the stand for crowding. A first thinning that comes too late leaves you with tall, thin trees that bend and break.
About one acre in four has a hard layer not far below the root zone. Pine roots shallow there, so thin it earlier.
The Bottom Is a Separate Decision
Pearl River bottom stays wet and floods. Hardwood there grows slowly and is often much older than the pine above it.
Cruise it separately and offer it separately. Mixed into a pine sale, hardwood never gets described by species and grade.
Access Before Anything
Getting trucks to the stand is the first question, not the last. Bottom crossings are where jobs stall.
Check culverts and low spots on the haul route while it is still your decision to make.
Wet Weather Limits
A rainy stretch can shut down the low ground for weeks while the ridges still carry equipment.
Split the job so the crew has somewhere dry to go. That keeps the work moving and keeps ruts out of the bottom.
Planting the Next Stand
Upland acres go back to pine. Bottom acres are normally left to restock naturally, and that holds only where a walk finds seed trees and established stems.
Settle it before the harvest, not after.
